Today we’re studying one of our favorite fruits – the orange! The scientific name for the orange is Citrus sinensis in the family Rutaceae. There are more than 600 types of oranges, and they fall into two basic categories: sweet oranges and bitter oranges. The most economically important genus in the family is Citrus, which includes the orange (C. × sinensis), lemon (C. × limon), grapefruit (C. × paradisi), and lime (C. aurantifolia, the key lime).
